Acidity – Causes, Home Remedies and Preventive Measures

Acidity or heartburn is the burning sensation that you feel at the chest area. High acid content digestive juices of stomach irritate lining of esophagus or food pipe.

According to several Ayurveda experts, acidity is the direct result of change in food habits. As such acidity was not a severe problem in Vedic times and little reference can be found to this ailment. Charaka and Sushruta mentions the disease in their treatises – Charaka Samhita and Sushrutha Samhitha. Madhava Acharya also mentions the disease as Amla-pitta or acidic pitta. The ancient name of the disease tells about the acidic nature.

When talking in dosha terms, acidity occurs due to vitiation of vata, kapha or both. Three types of vitiation only.

The primary cause of acidity is credited to inappropriate food habits of modern man. People today hardly ever think about compatibility of food. Incompatible food is poisonous. There are specific rules to control the quality and quantity of food we take. The food habit also must be bind to a specific rule of timing.

Taking food several times a day, eating more food than one needs, eating excess sweet, sour or spicy items, fried food, hard to digest food etc are reasons for acidity. Having no regular timing for taking food is another reason for acidity. This destroys the balance of pitta of digestive system.

According to Ayurveda, the reasons for acidity are not entirely physical. Negative emotions like anger, anxiety, depression can be responsible for the onset of acidity.

Ayurvedic home remedies for Acidity

Powdered Indian gooseberry (amalaki) mixed in warm milk is a good medicine for mild to moderate cases of acidity. You can also take gooseberry powder with a teaspoon of honey.

Chew some tulsi (holy basil) leaves.

Chew a small piece of fresh ginger with a pinch of sea salt.

When suffering from acidity, drink five to eight glass of coconut water a day.

Chew a piece of clove.

Heat two or three petals of garlic and chew it down.

Acidity - Preventive measures

Keeping a healthy daily food regimen can avoid instances of acidity. Eat fresh fruits, vegetables and drink 8-12 glass of water according to your physical capacity.

Avoid incompatible food.

Take light meals that make it easy for digestive system to quickly digest the food you eat. If you eat too much bulky meals, it will become hard for the digestive system to digest the food.

Identify the reasons for stress. This will help you better manage stress in your day to day life.
